Three companies.
One energy chain.

Holborn is an integrated downstream energy group. Its three operating companies cover the full value chain, from crude oil procurement and refining in Hamburg to a nationwide retail network in Germany.

Holborn Investment Company Limited is the group's non-operating holding company. It holds and oversees the three operating companies, each managed independently within its field.

Independent operations.
One group.

A century
of evolution.

The group took shape one step at a time. Each stage built on the one before it, from a coal business in 1925 to renewable fuels in 2027.

1925

Roots in coal

Hermann Eggert starts a coal business in Elmshorn, the roots of the HEM name.

1987

A tanker at Dock 6

The group acquires the closed Hamburg refinery. On 22 December the first tanker, NEDI 1, berths at Dock 6.

1988

The lights come back on

Production restarts on 4 January, and former employees return.

1989

Connected by pipeline

Crude arrives by pipeline from Wilhelmshaven. The first HEM station opens in Westerrönfeld.

1997

HEM goes nationwide

HEM expands into a nationwide network, giving the group a direct position in the German retail market.

2027

The next chapter

Renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel production is planned to start in Hamburg.
